Gasket for espresso maker - precise fit is important
The seal of a espresso maker, a small rubber ring made of food-safe silicone, enables daily enjoyment of the aromatic pick-me-up. As long as the seal functions perfectly, we drink our beloved espresso and pay no attention to the inconspicuous sealing ring. But if the seal of the espresso maker becomes porous and brittle over time, the crema and full-bodied aroma are quickly gone.
How does the espresso maker seal work?
An espresso maker needs a seal to ensure that the necessary pressure for brewing is created in the lower water reservoir of the maker. Only when the upper and lower parts of the espresso pot are firmly screwed together and the seal fits snugly between them, no steam or water can escape. Only under these conditions will the required steam pressure be created. The water is then forced through the filter holder and the espresso powder into the upper part of the espresso pot via the riser tube.
When do I have to replace the seal?
Steam pressure, heat, as well as mechanical pressure from twisting on and off, and equally harsh cleaning agents, all take their toll on the gasket of your Caffettiera over time. However, there is no rule of thumb for replacement. But our experience has shown that replacement is recommended about every 10 to 12 months. So in any case, you should not wait until the gasket is brittle and hot water, steam or espresso is leaking from the screw connections of the espresso maker.
How do I properly care for the espresso maker gasket?
- Tightening - Please tighten the espresso maker carefully and not too tightly, and make sure in advance that the gasket is properly seated and it is not improperly squeezed in the screw thread.
- Cleaning - Please do not use harsh cleaning agents. They will attack the plastic of the gasket and cause it to age more quickly, making it brittle, porous and fragile.
- Cooling down - Please always allow the espresso maker to cool down a little before unscrewing it. When hot, the espresso maker seal is more susceptible to mechanical damage when unscrewing the pot.
- Washing out and drying - Please wash out the gasket with cold water after making espresso and cooling down. Then dry the espresso maker gasket with a towel without bending, lying flat.
- When purchasing a new espresso maker gasket, please ensure that the gasket is the correct size. We at Aromatico are here to help and advise you.
