Arabica and Robusta coffee beans

Coffee beans grow within the coffee belt. In bean science, a distinction is made between Coffea Arabica (Arabica) and Coffea Canephora (Robusta). Arabica coffee beans account for about 60% of coffee cultivation worldwide.

Arabica

Arabica beans tend to be larger than Robusta beans, have an elongated, flat shape and a slightly curved furrow in the longitudinal section of the bean.
Arabica plants are demanding in terms of climatic conditions, growing exclusively at higher altitudes. They thrive predominantly in South and Central America, as well as in parts of Africa.
In terms of flavor profile, Arabica beans are very diverse. They can develop sweet, sour, spicy and above all fruity notes. In addition, Arabica beans contain less caffeine than Robusta beans.

BEAN TASTE TREND: ARABICA OR ROBUSTA?

There are over 124 different types of coffee beans in total, the best known being Arabica and Robusta. In total, these two types account for 90% of the world's trade. But what are the differences between Arabica and Robusta beans, and is Robusta inferior to Arabica?

LEARN MORE

Robusta

Robusta beans are small, round coffee beans with a rather straight, central furrow. Coffee plants that bear Robusta coffee beans grow in Asia, India and parts of Africa. These also grow in low regions and prefer warmer climates.
Robusta beans have a higher caffeine content than Arabica beans and are often incorporated into espresso blends. They give a characteristic strong bitter note and allow a firm crema to develop.
The rating of coffee beans depends on the bean size (screensize) and the respective growing region. The price varies depending on the exclusivity of the provenance, the type of processing and the demand. Arabica coffee beans are traded on the New York Stock Exchange and Robusta coffee beans on the London Stock Exchange.
