Step 1: Remove espresso residues from the portafilter
Make sure that the cups are no longer under the portafilter. Unclamp the portafilter. Remove the old coffee powder, the espresso puck, in style by knocking off the portafilter into the brew drawer or a knock-off box.
Step 2: Blow out steam lance
The milk frothing nozzle should be cleaned after every cup of coffee. Many portafilter machines have a special function for this, otherwise clean it with a short burst of steam. For stubborn milk residues, soak the lance and then rinse it thoroughly.
Step 3: Clean brew group
In addition, it is recommended to flush the machine after each coffee withdrawal. To do this, operate the coffee maker once without the portafilter to clean the brew group. This empty draw also brings the water to the optimum temperature for the subsequent coffee preparation.
Step 4: Insert blind sieve
First insert the dummy sieve, which is impermeable to water, into the portafilter instead of the normal sieve.
Step 5: Fill blind sieve with cleaner and water
Then fill the dummy sieve with warm water and a few drops of special detergent for portafilter machines. Insert the portafilter into the machine and operate the lever. This will allow the cleaning liquid to flush the machine after sufficient pressure has built up. When you operate the lever again, dirty water will flow into the drip tray. Repeat this process until no coffee or other residues are visible in the drained water.
Step 6: Final cleaning of the parts
Finally, remove all moving parts of the portafilter, clean them and dry them thoroughly. When reassembling, make sure that all components are tight and not jammed. About every two months, the entire machine must be descaled in order to clean the portafilter.
