Comfortable and precise dosing
The Baratza Vario W is a great all-round coffee grinder that impresses above all with its built-in precision scales with an accuracy of 0.1 grams. The great advantage of this system is that the control of the dosing function is actually based on the desired dose in grams and is entered directly - super intuitive. The usual dosing via a timer becomes inaccurate at the latest when the grinding speed deviates due to various factors. Reasons for this can be a change in grinding degree and bean type, but also a different fill level in the bean container. None of this is a problem with the Vario W - it reliably grinds just as much coffee as you want.
Proper grinding with the Vario W
Operating the Vario W from Baratza is very easy. A generous and clear panel is attached to the front of the slim mill. Three amounts in grams can be saved or retrieved with three dedicated buttons. First set with the arrow keys below the display and then press and hold the desired key 1, 2 or 3 to save. A large, intuitively labeled button starts and stops the grinding process. A second large button can be used to tare the scale manually. On the left and right edge of the panel are the two grid sliders for setting the degree of grinding. The slider on the right handles major changes on a scale from 1 to 10. The slider on the left, on the other hand, is responsible for fine-tuning and is scaled alphabetically in 23 steps from A to W. In total, there are more than 200 individual degrees of grinding, which can be easily found again thanks to the clever scaling.
Tip: Baratza recommends the following settings as a starting point for the various types of preparation:
- Espresso: Macro controls in the range 1 to 3
- AeroPress: 5 N
- Hario V60: 6 M
- Filter coffee machines: 6 M
- Chemex: 10 L
- French Press: 10 Z
- Siphon: 6 M
Top regrind and long service life
The Vario W is equipped with 54 mm ceramic grinding discs from the Swiss manufacturer Ditting. Ceramic has the advantage of being harder than steel, which means the burrs stay sharp longer. The grinding result is extremely homogeneous and ideally suited - both for filter coffee and espresso. To clean the grinder, the upper grinding disc and its holder can be easily removed. The 130 watt motor drives the mill at 1350 revolutions per minute, which ensures that the material to be ground is not heated despite the appropriate grinding speed and that the mill runs comparatively quietly.
